Autism and the School System

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of Autism is certainly no exception.

Autistic children will have special needs when it comes to schooling. Many children with Autism go to public school and do just fine with some special modifications. There are laws pertaining to kids with disabilities. Here are some of the things you will need to know about Autism and school.

The Individuals With Disabilities Act

The Individuals with Disabilities act was passed to make sure all children receive a free and appropriate public education that meets their needs. The act requires children with special needs to have special education service as long as they meet the requirements. Autism meets that requirement.

Free and Appropriate Education

This is an education that meets the special needs of your child. It is one that allows them to make progress learning.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

Least Restrictive Learning Environment

This means that your child will be placed in an educational setting that is right for their special needs while allowing them to socialize with kids that do not have a disability. The school will do what it can to meet the needs of your Autistic child while keeping them in regular classrooms.

To figure out what special needs your child will need the school will evaluate your child. This evaluation can be requested by the school or the parent. If you think there is a problem write a letter to the school asking them to evaluate your child. They will send a paper home for you to sign that gives permission for the evaluation to take place. During the evaluation your child will be tested for learning disabilities along with any mental, or behavioral problems. After the evaluation is complete the school will have a meeting with you to discuss their findings, and what can be done to help your child.

IEP

An IEP is used when a child has a need for special education services. The group that evaluated the child will be part of the team that creates the IEP. The parents will also have a say in what is included in the IEP. An IEP will state the needs the child has to get an appropriate education. They will also list the services the child is going to receive in the IEP. The IEP can be evaluated at any time if the services are not working for the child. An example of some services that might be included in an IEP are extra time when completing class work, have tests read aloud to the child, or an aide is provided for the child. Each IEP will be different for each child. The IEP will be evaluated on a yearly basis unless the parents request it sooner. The parents have the right to be at every IEP meeting held.

You are your child’s best advocate when dealing with the school system. Some schools will try to give you the run around. They will do whatever they can to keep your child from having any special services in school. You have to be the one to stand up for your child. You are their voice. If you do not feel comfortable dealing with the school alone there are lawyers and advocates that are there to help.

So now you know a little bit about Autism. Even if you don’t know everything, you’ve done something worthwhile: you’ve expanded your knowledge.

Combat Aging Wisely

The best course of action to take sometimes isn’t clear until you’ve listed and considered your alternatives. The following paragraphs should help clue you in to what the experts think is significant.

Suddenly, looking in the mirror is a burden. Suddenly, you don’t go out that much. The sight of crow’s feet haunts you even if you don’t have them. Face it, you’re aging.

Technically, aging means a process that includes changes in the structure and elasticity of the skin over time. Usually, it starts as early as your late teenage years and may start as late as in your late twenties. Our skin does a lot of things. It analyzes sensations such as pressure, pain and touch. It also protects us from the environment, helps balance fluid and electrolytes and most of all, helps in the regulation of our body temperature. With that said, our skin is clearly overworked. The least we can do is protect it from further harm.

Aging is majorly caused by either of these two: normal physiological aging (no matter what we do, we will wrinkle in time) and UV exposure (accounts for 95% of the wrinkles that you might have now). The enemy that we have to combat is the UV exposure. How can we beat it?

KNOW YOUR ENEMY

There are three kinds of UV rays: the UVA, UVB and UVC. These are graded according to their wavelength. The longest wavelength rage are UVA rays and the shortest, UVC rays.

UVA wavelengths are almost harmless. The hazard is not non-existing but it’s highly negligible. Sunlight, when passing through ordinary glass contains UVA wavelengths. Short UVA wavelengths are those used for sun/UV tanning. However, this form of tanning is not completely safe. It still exposes your skin to UV rays and hastens its aging. Also, around 50% of skin cancer is acquired through sun tanning.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of Staying Young is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about Staying Young.

UVA does not damage DNA directly, unlike UVB and UVC. It doesn’t cause sunburn but it can penetrate deeply. UVA can produce reactive chemical intermediates which can harm the DNA such as hydroxyl and oxygen radicals. UVA rays damage the collagen fibers of your skin.

Next, let’s talk about UVB. Your skin can only take small amounts of UVB rarely. Meaning, no matter how small the exposure is, it is dangerous if it’s every day. UVB, like UVA, can deplete the Vitamin A in your skin. Unlike UVA, UVB light causes DNA damage directly. It awakens the DNA molecules in the skin cells, causing a modification on the DNA’s growing strand. This is a mutation that is commonly found in most skin cancer cases. UVB also causes collagen damage, albeit slower than UVA.

UVC is the least penetrating since the outermost portion of your skin, the epidermis, is made of dead cells. This portion protects you from UVC. UVC is quite damaging to living cells and has burning effects.

ARM YOURSELF

The best that you can do to combat these culprits is to wear sun block/sunscreen every day. The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor), the better. Experts suggest wearing sun block/ sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for everyday use. However, if you are at the beach, or biking, or hiking, your sun block should have a minimum of SPF 30. It’s like having 15 layers of skin every day or 30 layers of skin when you are heavily exposed to the sun.

Don’t think that if there’s no sun you can steer clear from UV damage. Wear sunblock EVEN IF there is no sun. Remember that the stronger UV rays can penetrate through the clouds and these can still damage your skin. These are the rays that you should protect yourself from. Also, some bulbs contain UV rays, albeit weaker. So even if you’re just indoors, it’s still advised to wear sunblock.

There. That is just everything you need to fight aging. Remember to keep the principles handy. First, learn about your enemy and then arm yourself. It’s the ?art of war??of beauty war.

Killing Ants with Natural Insecticides

Ants can be a nuisance, a threat to those who are allergic to ant bites, and have been known as killers. It wouldn’t seem possible of such a tiny creature, but their biggest defense seems to be their numbers. They multiply rapidly, easily, and quickly. They can take over a yard if left to themselves. A small child who accidentally falls into a fire ant bed and becomes quickly covered in them will be in misery and pain, sometimes having to be rushed to an emergency room. A dying animal can be overtaken by them and used as a food source.

Ants eat a wide variety of things. They’re not nearly as picky as we humans when it comes to their dinner choices. They don’t even need silverware! They can carry large weights in comparison to their body sizes.

It’s human nature to immediately grab a can of ant spray or a bag of granules and begin walking the yard to search for their colonies. If you’ve lived in places like Texas and Louisiana, you know that ant beds can become huge. The fire ants are aggressive and dangerous. It’s much better to control an infestation than to wake up one day and realize that your property now belongs more to the ants than to you.

Sometimes insects can become immune to the chemicals sold on the market. Ant bait and ant poisons can lose their effectiveness due to overuse and years of enduring the same poisons. The chemicals can also cause harm to other insects and animals. If you don’t store them properly, your children could become poisoned by them.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

While it’s true that many natural insecticides can be dangerous as well, they are safer for our environment and safer overall than chemical poisons, especially if you know how to use, mix, and store them properly.

Natural or organic insecticides are those which come from natural resources. Boric acid, which is a form of the mineral boron, is used on ant beds. Sometimes it is mixed with other things like sugar and boiling water. It can also be mixed as borax soap with sugar and water and is safe to use around pets and small children. Many people sprinkle it along the entry points in their houses and apartments or campers.

Another natural insecticide to use as an ant control is cayenne pepper, made into a liquid and used as a spray. You can grow your own pepper plants just for this purpose. Hot peppers are also used to control or kill other insects. Just make sure you don’t let your small child have access to your pepper plants. Hot peppers can sometimes cause blisters when eaten.

Corn meal can be used as ant control; it’s a low-cost alternative to poisonous chemicals. If you grow your own corn, you may even know how to make your own corn meal. It’s a food the ants like to eat, but can’t digest.

There are many solutions for natural insecticides that can benefit your pocket book, your plants, and your environment. It’s a way to treat insects that can help everyone win!

As your knowledge about Natural Insectiside continues to grow, you will begin to see how Natural Insectiside fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.

Top Reasons for Composting

If you’re seriously interested in knowing about Composting, you need to think beyond the basics. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Composting.

Some of us may be hesitant in making and using compost. They find the task of making one troublesome and time consuming. Or they might have false perceptions of smelly compost piles and having such a messy process right in their backyards. While others would prefer buying their fertilizers, soil amendments or conditioners, and mulch from their garden stores to avoid all the hassle of reading about compost and actually making one.

Here are my top personal reasons for composting. I only hope that you move your butt out of that chair and begin your own compost pile before you reach number ten.

The first reason I find composting highly worthwhile is the fact that the materials used are absolutely free and are readily available. Compare that with the ever rising costs of commercial fertilizers and other gardening products in the market today. All you need is a little extra effort to find the best materials for your compost pile, but otherwise, everything’s for free.

The second one is that compost provides more nutrients and minerals needed by my plants than commercial organic or synthetic fertilizers. The overall effect of compost is also longer than commercially available fertilizers. It’s free and it works better, who wouldn’t want that? Plus, if you organize your ingredients just right, you can provide a whole lot more range of nutrients.

Another good reason would be the benefits of compost to the soil structure. When applied to the soil, compost can help the soil be more resistant to erosion, improve its retention of water, and in some types of soil (like clay) it can reduce the chance the soil becomes compact. This is also important for farmers since compost can make the soil easier to till conserving time and fuel needed to operate the machines.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Composting. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

With the right composting technique, the process can kill those troublesome weeds as well as pests and disease-causing organisms present in the materials being composted. High temperature composting is the technique I am talking about. Although, this technique is not the backyard variety but rather a more laboratory or industrial type variety, I still find it a good reason why we should make composts.

There have been studies which indicate that using compost can suppress the growth of diseases in crops. Other studies also show that crops grown over compost rich soils can resist better pest or insect attacks. Likewise, some news and observations in the field also shows that crops grown using compost bear produce that can be stored longer. If that’s not reason enough, I don’t know what else you are looking for.

For the environmentalists and conservationists, compost has something for them as well. Using compost together with the soil can build soil carbon which can eventually reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It may take a lot of compost to have a positive effect on the greenhouse gases but that fact is quite useful as well.

It is also found out that compost works well as an antidote for soils that are toxic with agricultural chemicals. Compost can balance the levels of soil acidity, and helps farmers to go organic after years of using synthetic agricultural products.

These are my top reason for composting. Some of it may not directly benefit my personal needs but having those reasons to cling onto is a good thing to motivate the use of compost.

How to Overcome Stuttering

Stuttering is a disorder not a disease. No one knows why it happens but it can be treated. Did you know that some of the most famous people in the world once stuttered? Yes it’s true and this happened years before the world ever head of them. But stuttering can also happen later on in life. The question now is how to overcome stuttering.

Since you are not a kid anymore, don’t expect your parents to be the ones to get you some help. This is something you are going to have to do yourself and you have to do whatever it takes to improve your speech abilities. You may need to get professional help which was not available years ago and try various techniques to find that right one that works.

The professional you should consult with it a speech language pathologist because he or she has the experience to deal with such a disorder. When you go looking for one, make sure he has a certificate from ASHA or American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has passed the state licensure exam. Once he is able to assess your condition, only then will he be able to recommend the right treatment.

Someone once said that the greatest ?fear is fear itself.? If you let your fear take control, you will not be able to achieve any progress with the various techniques given by the specialist. You just have to bite the bullet and remember that you are working to become a better person.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Stuttering. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

While you are still ?a work in progress,? you should be able to keep your stuttering within manageable limits. If you have to talk slowly, go ahead because again, this is much better than repeating a letter or word several times which, others may find annoying. On times that the fear gets the better of you, think nothing of it and try to control it much better next time.

Action speaks louder than words and this is so true when you have a stuttering problem. If one form of therapy does not work, tell your doctor about it so something new can be attempted. Role play is quite effective in this case so you just have to practice some scenarios so you are comfortable with it when its time to face the real thing.

Patience is one virtue you really need to control your stuttering. This is because the problem will not go away overnight. The progress which you hope for can only be achieved by the amount of effort you put in. Your determination or motivation should not be to impress others but to improve who you are. Yes there will be setbacks but this should drive you to work harder.

If you have patience and have the determination to become a better person, you also have a feeling of self worth. This is because your stuttering problem has not controlled your life and you are taking steps to control it. Stuttering may be your flaw but if you are able to show your other qualities, this will not really matter.

We are not perfect and all of us have our own deficiency of some sort. We can let others feel sorry for ourselves or we can make the best of what we have and put some humor into it because we should be able to be happy and enjoy the rest of our lives.

Secondhand Mobility Scooters For Sale And Purchase

If a mobility scooter would make a positive difference in your life or the life of a loved one but the cost of a scooter is the obstacle that is preventing you from purchasing one, you may want to consider purchasing a used or secondhand mobility scooter. It is possible to regain some of the independence that an individual may have once enjoyed prior to their walking becoming a difficult task with the help of a mobility scooter.

Brand new mobility scooters range in price from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the make and model of the scooter. Most are powered by electricity via one or two onboard rechargeable batteries. More expensive models usually have two batteries onboard to accommodate a more powerful motor, which is helpful when climbing hills and steep slopes. Convenient features and optional accessories will also increase the price of a new mobility scooter. However, purchasing a secondhand scooter can save hundreds of dollars without sacrificing quality. In addition, purchasing a secondhand scooter from an individual, secondhand specialty store or online auction may allow you the opportunity to purchase a mobility scooter already equipped by the previous owner with many of the accessories that will add to your comfort and convenience without your having to incur additional costs.

Before you start exploring the landscape in search of a secondhand mobility scooter, you should research the makes and models currently available at a medical supply or similar specialty store or online. Many scooter manufacturers and distributors have websites that include detailed descriptions and articles to help you determine which type of mobility scooter would be best to accommodate the individual needs of the rider.

You can see that there’s practical value in learning more about Mobility Scooters. Can you think of ways to apply what’s been covered so far?

Purchasing a secondhand mobility scooter from an individual will almost definitely always be an ?as-is’ sales transaction, meaning you get exactly what you see, exactly as it is at that moment with no implied or expressed guarantee or warranty. Most people seek to sell a used mobility scooter if the previous owner no longer has a need for the scooter or if the previous owner has upgraded to a more sophisticated model. Be prepared to ask the seller the reason for the sale, the original date of purchase and length of the original warranty. You should also ask if there have been any mechanical difficulties with the scooter in the past. Tires and batteries are considered consumable items that need occasional replacement, so be sure to ask if these items are still original or if they had previously been replaced, and if so when.

Online auctions provide a popular and convenient method of purchasing a secondhand mobility scooter. EBay is the most popular internet auction site, bringing buyers and sellers of a vast multitude of products together. Simply typing ?mobility scooter’ in the search bar on EBay will bring you a listing of secondhand scooters for sale. Each of the mobility scooters listed will include a detailed description of the scooter and the seller’s payment, shipping and warranty policies. Most of the listings will also include photographs and you can always contact the seller directly for more information or photographs. The bid will have an ending time, and the buyer who has submitted the highest bid will win the item for the bid price at the end of the auction. In cases where the seller will accept a certain pre-determined price you will see a ?buy it now’ icon, which indicates you can purchase the scooter at that price and avoid the bidding process. The buy it now price will most likely still be much lower than purchasing the same scooter brand new, enabling you to reap the benefits of a mobility scooter without draining your bank account.

A Brief Explanation about Stuttering and Brain Problems

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of Stuttering is certainly no exception.

Stuttering and brain problems are often being interrelated by the various studies which have been conducted about the topic. Although nothing has been proven yet as a strong evidence or proof as to the relation, there are different studies that point to the disfigured area on the brain’s anatomy that controls speech as the one responsible for the stuttering.

Although aside from brain problems, stuttering can also be rooted to emotional dilemma and baggage. A child may go through this stage when they are only beginning to talk up to about three years old. But this is a normal phase that everybody will go through. The problem begins when the speech doesn’t develop long after such phase and the stuttering won’t seem to stop. This is when parents should be alert in finding a cure for their children because the red flag is starting to raise that they are suffering from a medical condition already.

Characteristics of Stutterers

The more authentic information about Stuttering you know, the more likely people are to consider you a Stuttering expert. Read on for even more Stuttering facts that you can share.

Stutterers usually show signs of repetition of consonants to words and phrases. The longer the words they repeat, the more serious their situation is. Aside from constant repetition, stutterers have long pauses or a series of short ones when they are expressing their thoughts. They also appear drawn out from what they are saying because of the manner in which they are expressing what they want to say.

A child who is just learning how to talk and is experiencing the whole process is very different from a child with a mild form of stuttering condition. The latter will often be caught with more than twice repetition of sounds that they hear of syllables from what they really would want to say. Usually, the facial muscle of a child with a medical condition becomes tensed and they might appear to be fighting with the words that they really want to express but are still figuring out how.

Other children with this condition will raise their voices out of exasperation about their situation. Some children will pause on the midst of their sentences because they could hardly breathe or they lack the air needed to be able to go on with what they are saying. The severe cases for children are said to be those who stutter for more than 10 percent of their whole speech.

The child may appear rowdy and irritable because they feel the exasperation of doing something that appears so easy for other people to do. They feel the tension and the pressure may also get into them. This will be worse if they will be exposed to other children who do not have their condition and who wouldn’t understand them. Once they are bullied about their situation, the more chances that they will feel like a failure. This may lead for them to shy away from the public light. This may also cause early signs of depression for these children.

The Cure

There are drugs available nowadays which you can try for your child to take. But the chances of getting better really depend on the child’s immune system and how their system reacts to the drugs. As a parent, the best cure that you can give to your child who has this problem is support and continuous therapy.

And although stuttering and brain problems are often being linked, the condition doesn’t really affect one’s intelligence. So somebody who has it can still achieve flying colors in life and career.

That’s how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest news.

Helping Nature by Composting

If you are still find it hard to understand the nature of composting, it can actually be simplified. It can actually be compared to recycling. Instead of throwing out all your waste and garbage, or at least what you consider as garbage, you can sort that out. In recycling, you need to pick the things that can still be transformed into other materials so that you can use them for different purposes.

The more popular things that are being utilized in recycling are the pins on soda cans. These are said to help out in making aluminum. Other containers can be used as pots or vases. Used clothes can be turned into mats or rugs. The idea here is that while there are things that can still be useful in your everyday lives, most of the recycled materials are being implemented as decorative elements.

With the products of compost, you will not pick things out of the garbage pile to be able to come up with other things that will be useful to you on your everyday life. No, the process will not come up with an exotic looking vase or a picture frame made out of shells or bottle caps. You can leave those thoughts to recycling.

Composting entails the recycling of the materials that can be found on nature. The popular samples of this would be dried leaves, grass clippings, vegetable or fruit peelings, animal manure, sawdust, among others. How would all these be useful? Unlike the practical applications of the product of recycling, this in turn will mostly be for gardening purposes.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Composting. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

This will be especially helpful if you are into organic gardening. This method requires the use of organic materials. That means that you cannot turn to synthetic products, especially for the purpose of fertilizers and pesticides. And it is possible. Your compost can make the soil for this type of gardening healthy and happy. As a result, it will produce healthy crops and chemical-free plants.

Organic gardening may sound complicated to the novice ears. But if you put your heart into it, you will find out that all the hard work that you will spend doing this will all be worth it. But this doesn’t really mean that you have to do it especially if you can’t afford to because of the time consideration and other factors.

But even if you don’t have time to do organic gardening, you can still try your hand in making compost. This can also apply with people living on the urban zones. Even with such situation, you can still do a little gardening trick by having your plants in pots. No, you don’t need to go organic all the way. Nobody’s telling you to do so. But using the products of your compost as a fertilizer can actually engage you with the project and may start your curiosity towards the real organic gardening thing.

Besides, everything nowadays seems to be marketed as organic. Look at the grocery aisles. There are organic food, organic soap, organic tissue, cloth and everything. This seems to be trend. And nature is definitely not complaining.

By going out of your way to do composting, consider nature sending out her appreciation your way. And may this inspire you to do other things to help with the causes of Mother Earth.

Now might be a good time to write down the main points covered above. The act of putting it down on paper will help you remember what’s important about Composting.
